Design guide
Colours, fonts, the map style, its controls and every word visitors see.
Colours, fonts and map style
Colours & style starts with the map style: dark, light, colour, Your own colours (choose the sea and land), or Outdoor, a walking map with hill shading, contours and paths. Then pick a ready-made colour theme and fine-tune any colour, choose fonts (or “Match my theme”), and the card style: outline, corners and shadow. The preview changes as you go.
Under For walkers you can show waymarked walking routes over any style, and have walks and trail rides use Outdoor on their own maps.
Map controls and tiles
Map controls sets what visitors use on every map: the search and filter bar (floating over the map, or in a block under it), the Reset view button, the filter chips on the cards, and miles or kilometres for Near me.
Map tiles are the map’s background. OpenFreeMap is free with no key and no limits, and suits nearly every site. Others, such as MapTiler or CARTO, need a key from their website, or the map is blank or stamped.
Wording and branding
Every word visitors see, from buttons to the suggestion form, can be changed, so the map speaks in your own voice or language. You can also rename the plugin in the admin menu and add your logo to the map.
What visitors can do on a map
Filter by listing type from the bar, or pick a continent. Under the cards, narrow further by price, month, or a country or town, and the map zooms in to it. All clears every filter at once. Sort the cards. Search by name, town or country, or a place (“near Leeds”). Near me sorts everything by distance. List shows listings beside the map. Share a link or embed code. Get directions from where they are.
On phones the map sits still so the page scrolls past it, and a tap opens it full screen, where it works like any map app. On a computer, the frosted strip down the right zooms.
