Routes guide
Drives, bike rides and walks drawn on the map, with places to stay and a live mode for the road.
Drawing a route
Switch Routes on at the top of the Routes page, and every post editor gains a Route box. Any post can carry one; it doesn’t need the map category.
1. Choose how it is travelled: driving, cycling on roads, cycling on roads and trails, or walking. 2. Click the map for the start, then the finish: the route follows the roads or paths that suit, and each further click carries it on. Click the line to add a bend point and drag it; click a bend point to remove it. Undo, Reverse and Start again are under the map. 3. Tick the places to stay along it.
Or upload a GPX file from a GPS device or an app such as Komoot or Strava. Every route is also saved as a GPX file in your Media Library, so it stays yours whatever happens to this plugin.
Places to stay and days
Places to stay are listings of a type whose “What is it?” is Accommodation; switching Routes on adds a “Places to stay” type if you have none. The ones near the route are listed in its Route box: tick them, and tick “Stay the night” where a day ends, and the route shows day by day.
For a hotel you aren’t writing about, add it to the route by name, website and a click on the map. It shows on the route but never on the map by itself.
What visitors see
Routes show as lines in the colour of their way of travelling, with a Routes button in the bar and their own cards. Opening one shows its distance, climbing and roughly how long it takes, a height profile that points to the spot on the map, the days and places to stay, a GPX download and directions to the start.
Speed limits come from OpenStreetMap. In Wales, the 20 mph limits come from the Welsh Government’s own data, so the newer 20s are right. Speed signs on UK and US roads are always in mph, as on the road; elsewhere they follow your drive units.
The route’s own post shows it by itself, under a heading you can change in Design → Wording & branding. Choose the order routes are listed in under Routes → Order.
Live mode on the road
On a phone, Start on a route opens live mode: the map follows the traveller with the road ahead, the next turn, the distance to go and the speed limit, and warns when they leave the route. Places of interest along the road show as they pass.
They can drag or zoom the map to look ahead; Re-centre brings it back to where they are. Exit leaves live mode. Invite a friend shares a link by WhatsApp, text or copy, so a friend can see where they are and join them.
It needs Pinscribe Pro, and the visitor’s permission to use their location. Your site keeps nothing about where they are, except while they choose to share it with friends.
Miles or kilometres
Each kind of route has its own units under Route settings: walks and rides read best in kilometres, drives in miles, climbs in metres or feet. Tick “Let visitors switch” for a small km | mi switch beside each route’s distance; their choice is remembered on their device.
